Huh. Okay. Well, that's why I never put / or /usr on LVM. :^)

I'm not sure how LVM gets set up in your configuration. I assume it's
build into the initrd. Maybe you need to unpack that and have a look
around; maybe there's something you can tweak in your initrd configuration.
