Cheers, worked a treat - for the archives on CentOS the packages are: yum install lsscsi sg3_utils In the meantime I'd given up and installed omsa - slight overkill for a SN! Very useful for future reference. Interestingly OMSA reports: Serial No. : WD-WCAS2208118581185 whereas sg_inq: Unit serial number: WD-WCAS22081185 So the OMSA output is a slightly garbled.
