Hi Dave,

>From my experience the answers to your question are as follows.

Will the network be available throughout the execution of this script?

yes

- Does it ask for further confirmation?

no

- Does it reboot the box automatically, or will I need to do that
myself?

It will tell you at the end if a reboot is required... for bios it will
be.

- What *could* go wrong?

I've done 20 x 1950's without any hitches...

- Is it possible to revert to the previous BIOS if something goes wrong,
and what would those steps be?

During the flash process of the bios I'm pretty sure the script will
test and ensure that the flash went in ok and if not it will revert back
to old version this is normal practices with bios updates.

Cheers

Steve

Subject: PE 1850 remote firmware update worries

Hi,

I'm running CentOS 5.5 on my PE 1850. I've been following the steps
outlined in this document:

http://support.dell.com/support/systemsinfo/document.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bs
d&~file=/software/smdup/dup63/en/ug/html/3onliner.htm

The outputs of `inventory_firmware` and `update_firmware` are as
follows:

[r...@molybdenum ~]# inventory_firmware

Wait while we inventory system:

System inventory:

            BIOS = a04

            Primary Backplane = 1.00

PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 4e/Si Firmware = 521s

            System BIOS for PowerEdge 1850 = a04

            BMC = 1.40

[r...@molybdenum ~]# update_firmware

Running system inventory...

Searching storage directory for available BIOS updates...

Checking BIOS - a04

            Available: dell_dup_componentid_00159 - a07

            Found Update: dell_dup_componentid_00159 - a07

Checking Primary Backplane - 1.00

            Available: dell_dup_componentid_03967 - 1.00

Did not find a newer package to install that meets all
installation checks.

Checking PowerEdge Expandable RAID Controller 4e/Si Firmware - 521s

            Available:
pci_firmware(ven_0x1028_dev_0x0013_subven_0x1028_subdev_0x016c) - 5b2d

Did not find a newer package to install that meets all
installation checks.

Checking System BIOS for PowerEdge 1850 - a04

Did not find a newer package to install that meets all
installation checks.

Checking BMC - 1.40

            Available: dell_dup_componentid_05814 - 1.83

            Found Update: dell_dup_componentid_05814 - 1.83

Found firmware which needs to be updated.

Please run the program with the '--yes' switch to enable BIOS update.

   UPDATE NOT COMPLETED!

For my piece of mind I'd like to know exactly what happens, and what I
should be expecting when executing the `update_firmware --yes` command.
>From what I can tell this is a point of no return.

I'll be executing this upgrade remotely, but I do have the option of
having someone go on site if something goes terribly wrong.

Some specific questions I have:

- Will the network be available throughout the execution of this script?

- Does it ask for further confirmation?

- Does it reboot the box automatically, or will I need to do that
myself?

- What *could* go wrong?

- Is it possible to revert to the previous BIOS if something goes wrong,
and what would those steps be?

Thanks in advance,

-Dave
