Hi all,

I've come across a problem on which I was stuck for a while. Since I was unable to solve it elegantly, I ended up losing and restoring the data. I wonder if there's something I missed or if there was an other way to solve this.

Here's the situation:

Server #1):
- Dell PowerEdge 130
- RHEL 7.4.z (kernel 3.10.0-693.11.1.el7)
- PERC H730P (2gb) with firmware 25.5.3.0005
- boot SSD + 8Tb RAID-0 LD on a single disk. (named LD1 in the rest of this e-mail)
- latest MegaCLI 8.07.14 (rpm MegaCli-8.07.14-1.noarch)

Server #2):
- Dell PowerEdge 430
- RHEL 7.4.z (kernel 3.10.0-693.11.1.el7)
- PERC H730P (2gb) with firmware 25.5.3.0005
- boot SSD + RAID-5 LD and some empty disk bays.
- latest MegaCLI 8.07.14 (rpm MegaCli-8.07.14-1.noarch)

None of the HBA's in the servers is using encryption, as confirmed by:
---------------------------------------------------------
# MegaCli -ELF -ControllerFeatures -a0
This Feature is not supported
Exit Code: 0x01
---------------------------------------------------------

A few days ago, I needed to move LD1 from Server #1 to Server 2. To this effect, I shutdown Server #1, took the disk out, inserted it in server #2 and was expecting that a simple 'MegaCli -CfgForeign -Scan' would work.

However, although Server #2 did detect a 'foreign' configuration on the newly-added disk, when I tried to -Import it, I was greeted with the following message:

---------------------------------------------------------
FW does not have Security key, create Security key first.
Failed to import foreign configuration 0 on controller 0.
---------------------------------------------------------

Even more strange was what I found in the logfile from MegaSAS:

------------------------------------------------------------
Raw Size: 7.277 TB [0x3a3812ab0 Sectors]
Non Coerced Size: 7.276 TB [0x3a3712ab0 Sectors]
Coerced Size: 7.276 TB [0x3a3706000 Sectors]
Sector Size: 512
Logical Sector Size: 512
Physical Sector Size: 4096
Firmware state: Online, Spun Up
Device Firmware Level: T907
Shield Counter: 0
Successful diagnostics completion on : N/A
SAS Address(0): 0x4433221100000000
Connected Port Number: 7(path0)
Inquiry Data: 2XXXXXX HGST HUH728080ALE600 XXXXXXXXX
FDE Capable: Not Capable
FDE Enable: Disable
Secured: Unsecured <===================================
Locked: Unlocked <===================================
Needs EKM Attention: No
Foreign State: None
------------------------------------------------------------

So why did MegaCLI complain about a security Key when the feature wasn't even licensed and the drive was unencrypted?

Has anyone seen such a situation? Would things have worked better if I had rebooted Server #2 to make it import the drive upon boot?

I'll be repeating this operation shortly but I'd love to avoid restoring data if I can avoid it.. :)

Thanks for reading,

Vincent
