Hi everyone,
I got myself a new T440 to replace a maxed out T130. There were a few
issues with this new system (mostly caused by my ignorance) that I wish to
share here:
1) NVidia GPU. In the T130, I had a 30W Geforce 1030 GTX which worked
perfectly. When I attempted to use that card in the T440 - Slot 3, the
only PCI-E x16 slot-, it wasn't even detected as 'foreign'. After speaking
with Support, it turns out that a 2nd cpu is require to enable to PCI-E
lanes on slot-3. Because I only have a single cpu, I will have to source
another one if I want to use my former GPU.
2) Fan Noise. When I moved from the T130 to the T440, I also transferred
my PERC (H730P) and my SSD+ disk. The SSD & disk are all configured as
RAID-0 VD's on the H730P. One thing I had previously noticed was that the
Temperature sensor on that Samsung SSD evo 850 wasn't functional. (I have
another instance of that H730P+Evo 850 combo in another PowerEdge with the
same firmware revisions and I -do- get Temperature informaton there).
While the T130 didn't care, the iDrac in the T440 seemed to
notice the Temperature sensor on the SSD and consequently set the 120mm
system fan to 100% PWM due to the failure. At 4920rpm, it made the T440
sound like an F-15 at takeoff. I've since then ordered a newer SSD in hope
that it will solve the sensor issue and -then- I'll get the old drive
serviced.
By chance, the previous ipmitool commands to enable manual fan control
([1]) still worked and I was able to bring the fan down to 1080rpm while
keeping everything cooled. The system now idles at 66W ([2]) and the cpu
doesn't seem to exceed 40C so I'll be good for the rest of Winter.
In summary: I was quite disconcerted at first by that 14th gen server but
with a little bit of tuning I'm starting to like this new box.
[1]:
* Set to Manual control and set speed to 1080rpm:
/usr/bin/ipmitool raw 0x30 0x30 0x01 0x00
/usr/bin/ipmitool raw 0x30 0x30 0x02 0xff 0x0d
* Set back to Auto:
/usr/bin/ipmitool raw 0x30 0x30 0x01 0x01
[2]:
# ipmitool sdr list full|grep Watt
Pwr Consumption | 66 Watts | ok
Regards,
Vincent
