Hi Andrew,

I have the release done for the ipmi driver which fixes the issue on
RHEL 4.

It should be available soon for your download. I would update you as
soon as this is available.

Thanks

Srinivas

Thanks Srinivas,

The R184601 release is apparently for RedHat Linux 5.1, and doesn't
apply to (or compile on) RHEL 4.

The symptoms are the same however.

regards,

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

Please use the IPMI driver available at
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?c=us&l=en&ReleaseID=R184601.

This should fix your issue.

Thanks

Srinivas

The link to the R184601 release doesn't work for me; searching for the
same takes me to an IPMI download for RHEL 5.1.

I have looked at the Linux IPMI download page; the documentation there
suggests that with the provided code (which is the same as what's
provided with the latest RHEL 4.7 updates), IPMI on the 1750 will work
correctly.

thanks,

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

Looks like this is a known issue.

Can you please enable bt_debug on the failing machine and get me the
dmesg or /var/log/messages output.

Here's how you do it in case you are unaware:

Load the ipmi module with "bt_debug=7" to the modprobe/insmod line.

However, it might also be worthwhile to download the ipmi driver from
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?c=us&l=en&ReleaseID=R184601
also have a look at http://linux.dell.com/ipmi.shtml which has some
limitations of kernels v/s platforms v/s IPMI interfaces.

Thanks

Srinivas

Subject: RedHat 4.7 kernel updates and IPMI

Hi all,

The IPMI support in newer RedHat kernel updates from (at least)
2.6.9-78.0.8 seems to be broken for BT-type devices (such as the Dell
Poweredge 1750). This means that neither ipmitool nor OpenManage 5.5 on
this system work correctly.

The problem shows up, when the Dell dataeng service is starting, causing
the IPMI drivers to be loaded. For example, on a 2.6.9-78.0.1 kernel,
the following appears in the logfiles:

Aug 11 15:00:27 qaap600a-02 kernel: IPMI System Interface driver version
33.13, KCS version 33.13, SMIC version 33.13, BT version 33.13
Aug 11 15:00:27 qaap600a-02 kernel: ipmi_si: Found SMBIOS-specified
state machine at I/O address 0xe4, slave address 0x20
Aug 11 15:00:27 qaap600a-02 kernel: ipmi device interface version 33.13
Aug 11 15:00:56 qaap600a-02 kernel: input: PC Speaker
Aug 11 15:01:21 qaap600a-02 kernel: BT: timed out in WR_BYTES [ B_BUSY
H2B ]
Aug 11 15:01:21 qaap600a-02 kernel: restart command
Aug 11 15:02:16 qaap600a-02 kernel: BT: timed out in WR_BYTES [ B_BUSY
H2B ]
Aug 11 15:02:16 qaap600a-02 kernel: restart command
Aug 11 15:03:07 qaap600a-02 kernel: BT: timed out in WR_BYTES [ B_BUSY
H2B ]
Aug 11 15:03:07 qaap600a-02 kernel: retry limit (2) exceeded
Aug 11 15:03:07 qaap600a-02 kernel: IPMI: BT reset (takes 5 secs)
Aug 11 15:05:04 qaap600a-02 kernel: BT: timed out in WR_BYTES [ B_BUSY
H2B ]
Aug 11 15:05:04 qaap600a-02 kernel: retry limit (2) exceeded
Aug 11 15:05:04 qaap600a-02 kernel: Trying to free free IRQ10
Aug 11 15:05:04 qaap600a-02 kernel: ipmi_si: Unable to find any System
Interface(s)

With a 2.6.9-78 kernel, the ipmi_si driver loads correctly and the
kernel log file shows something like this:

Aug 18 00:39:11 qaap800a-02 kernel: IPMI System Interface driver version
33.13,
KCS version 33.13, SMIC version 33.13, BT version 33.13
Aug 18 00:39:11 qaap800a-02 kernel: ipmi_si: Found SMBIOS-specified
state machin
e at I/O address 0xe4, slave address 0x20
Aug 18 00:39:11 qaap800a-02 kernel: Using irq 10
Aug 18 00:39:11 qaap800a-02 kernel: IPMI bt interface initialized
Aug 18 00:39:11 qaap800a-02 kernel: ipmi device interface version 33.13

Is there a newer driver, or some other way to resolve this issue?
Suggestions appreaciated!

thanks,

Andrew
