Thanks Patrick. DMC looks interesting but impractical for us, even in a VM (I'm thinking hours to install, and yet another thing to keep up to date, has to be running on a beefy system etc).
But thanks to everyone's help I've got ITA working and communicating with machines that had net-snmp installed before OMSA. But on those machines where OMSA was installed before net-snmp, even with identical snmp.conf files with the proxy section in them added by OMSA on the other machines, ITA doesn't seem to get any details from them and puts them in the Unknown section (i.e. inventory does not happen). I'll investigate further, but I suspect I may just wait until a working OMSA 6.x comes out, in the hope that when it gets installed it will do whatever magic needs to be done behind the scenes to fix the problem. I hope :-) Unless someone knows what else OMSA does if it finds an snmpd installed other than modify the config very slightly?
