I'm using a USR V.90 Sportster, and my ISP has USR modems as well (like
the ones you described). I've experienced similar problems - I get a
good connection, but it slowly drops in speed and dies.
I've seen this when running Trumpet under WinDoze - I was able to
get a connection status (ATI6 command) from the modem after being
dumped. I saw a message "Reason for disconnect: GSTN Cleardown" (or
something like that). I'm not sure what that means, but it could be
significant.
