Back about 30 years ago when I used to ride BSA and Triumph
Motorcycles we regularly experienced a similar phenomenon
with both Smith's and Lucas' instrumentation. To wit, the
instrument indicated something awful was in progress while
in reality the system was working correctly but the instrument
was broken!
Here is my ifconfig output with kernel 2.117 and ppp
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:130.127.48.184 P-t-P:130.127.48.118 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:633 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:0 errors:61818 dropped:757 overruns:0
I get the same broken data on eth0. It would appear that the
problem results from the tools "ifconfig" being at a level
incompatible with the kernel..
