to paste: select text with left button, paste with middle (or left+right
together simulating the middle one) into an open text editor (in X or
console). Since you seem to be starting: might try 'pico' as editor.

Two hints:
1. upgrade pppd to 2.3.5 !!! :-)
2. Try connecting manually (with minicom for example, then ^A-Q, exit
without resetting the modem), then launch your pppd command as root.
Compare the debug messages.
