When I log in as root and "su >username" and run /etc/ppp/ppp-on it
connects just fine. Any one?

I am not an expert at linux, but I think I may just have the
answer to this one. Try changing the permissions on the ppp-on script so
that anyone can use it. I'm not sure what you set it to, someone else or
the man pages will have to answer that. As far as I know, when you su to
a normal account from root, it still leaves root power on, and that is
why you can use it. If that doesn't work, I guess it is possible that
the programs that it calls in the script might need permissions changes
too. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
