Greetings!

I have a Linux box which has been sitting in the corner for the past
several years, that has no monitor or keyboard attached to it, but I use it
as a router with a combination of ppp and IP Masquerading. This has been
very successful.

I have recently purchased a new computer, featuring Intel's 440 GX chipset
and dual Pentium II 450 processors.

It seems that everything I try results in the same problem:
When I run pppd, from any of several various configurations, my
/usr/adm/message file reports indicates that there is no response from the
modem.

I have an external modem connected to /dev/ttyS1 (kernel V 2.2 reports that
/dev/cuax is obsolete and to use /dev/ttySx).

I can access the modem with minicom, either directly or using the symbolic
link /dev/modem -> /dev/ttyS1

In frustration and desparation, I plugged the modem into /dev/ttyS0, and
even though everything in the ppp scripts points to /dev/ttyS1, the modem
dialed, although ppp did not connect. At this point, I am not worried
about why the ppp link failed after the modem dialed, in fact, I plugged
the modem back into /dev/ttyS1, since, I believe very strongly that it
should work there.

Does any of this ring the proverbial bell with anyone? I have spent the
past several days working on this problem with no results.

I even tried installing kernel 2.0.9, which is the same version that works
well on the IP-masquerade box, and copied all of the pppd, chat and the
entire /etc/ppp directory from this box, with the same results. I have
restored the kernel v2.2, since I need it for my scsi adapter and video
board.

I would be ever-so-thankful if anyone can point me in the correct direction
on this one.

Thanks!

Jim T.
