Hmmmmm, looks like some kind of compression check to me.  Doesn't STAC use
something called LZS (Lempel-Ziv-???) as a compression algorithm?  Perhaps
your ppp session is trying to negotiate a compression protocol and your
kernel doesn't support it properly.
