Hi.....

I am running RedHat 5.1 & ppp-2.3.5. I can dial out to my ISP, etc.,
but I cannot seem to be able to set my system up so that I can dial into
it and establish a PPP session.

What I am doing right now is dialing in to my system from another system
running Minicom. No problem, I can log in, play around as much as I like.

The problem occurs when I try to run "exec /usr/sbin/pppd -detach" (as
suggested in the PPP-HOWTO). Instead of getting the expected string of
"garbage" (which indicates the PPP link starting up), the modem just
disconnects !

It seems that my system (PAM) has forced a logout. Looking at the log
in /var/log/messages, I see this:

# This is when I log in normally
my_sys login[4027]: DIALUP AT ttyS0 BY ME
my_sys login[4027]: LOGIN ON ttyS0 BY ME

# This is what I get when I try to run pppd.....
my_sys PAM_pwdb[4027]: (login) session closed for user ME

   That's it...that's all I get for syslog/debug messages.

   I have pam-0.64-2 installed on the server-wannabe :-)

Am I correct in deducing that PAM is not allowing me to establish
a PPP session ? If that is the case, is there something in the config
files for PPP which is incorrectly set (/etc/pam.d/ppp) ?

The PPP docs don't say anything, and the PAM docs aren't much help.
I've also tried re-compiling pppd with HAVE_SHADOW and USE_PAM both
enabled and disabled, but nothing seems to work.

FWIW, the /home/ME/.ppprc file on the "server" is as follows:

noauth # Don't need PAP or CHAP
        :192.168.160.XXX # My local net is 192.168.160.0
        kdebug 7
        -detach
        modem
        crtscts
        lock
proxyarp # Do I really need this ?????

I have played around with this as well, but nothing seems to work.

   Any ideas ? TIA......
