Too bad.  You were nearly there.  Overwrite the 2.0.35 kernel
files, they are newer but they are derived from an older version 
of ppp.  A circumstance not contemplated when the single-dimension
comparison in the installation scripts was designed.

The only other thing you have to do is reverse an inequality
in line 3079 of ppp-2.3.5/linux/ppp.c, build, install, it works
like a champ.

Everybody who's read this list for more than a month or so is aware
of the problem.

Nobody has posted even a guess, since I've been subscribed, as to
whether anyone is likely to fix it.  More's the pity; the fix is
so trivial.  Any ppp maintainers listening?  Hint, hint?

I'm not aware as to whether the 2.0.36 kernel will introduce any
further difficulties.  Perhaps somebody who's had some luck building
against the pre-release might comment.
