I had the exact same problem today on both a Slackware 3.3 system AND
a Debian 2.0 box. This seems to happen with my ISP about once a year.
This year it may be because they are upgrading to 56K modems. Anyway
the problem went away after about 2 hours. It seems OK now. I
suspect that the message " Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean: "
either means our phone lines are bad or the ISP has a problem. No
amount of changes to my pppd args was able to fix it. I went back to
the original and an hour later the link was back up.
Hope yours does the same!
