I guess by "system prompt", you mean the shell prompt in the window from
which you executed pppd. That's because you have "-detach" in your
options, making pppd run in the foreground. You could have just started
another xterm, or typed ctl-Z and bg to kick pppd into the background
also.
But if you want (1) to kick off pppd from a shell window and (2) use the
SAME shell window for other purposes after pppd starts, then just don't
use "-detach". Using "-detach" requests exactly the behavior you are
getting.
