Sorry to keep banging on about this Michael, but since we seem to be
replying to several different bits here and there, and I want to make
sure that the following is understood by all.
If you use AutoPPP, you can use PAP or CHAP and not need any kind of
entry in /etc/passwd.
As both Geof and I have said, in this case pppd is started by mgetty,
and it is entirely up to you which one of pppd's authentication methods
you use. You can even choose not to authenticate at all if you so
desire.
I'll stop there to keep it simple. If you don't believe me, try it. I
use it, it works.
