Muchos gracias go out to Wayne Topa for providing the answer to the following problem:
I set up ppp on my machine, and I could get as far as dialing in, running the login verification, and even getting an IP address from my ISP. 'ifconfig' said their was traffic over the connection, and the routes were set up correctly, but I could not telnet or ftp, and when I 'ping'ed a host, I got the following error message:
ping: sendto: Operation not permitted.
Wayne suggested recompiling the kernel and including PPP support in the kernel, rather than as a module. That worked! I was running kernel 2.0.36 at the time, but I haven't looked into whether or not that is a "known" problem.
Perhaps someday this will help someone else who has banged their head against their monitor a million times because "for crying out loud, I've got an IP address, why can't I telnet!"
