As an update, I was directed to the just release 2.3.6 version of PPP. 
When I pulled it down and looked at it, this release had changes to the 
default route checking logic. It now checks the interface device name as 
well as the gateway address. This now allows a ppp default route to be 
added even though a slip (sl0) default route exists. Now I wonder what 
would happen if both routes were the same metric (and same gateway)?
