A computer with two network connections (In your case a modem for internet
and some other network connection for internal network). It would probably
do just fine on a 386 actually. The kernel firewall code is extremely
efficient. I've never spotted any performance degradation from using the
built in linux firewall. A P75 will undoubtedly work great. For a ppp
connection, you need to get a non winmodem, preferrably non plug and play
as well.
