This new feature made me wonder if some of you
might have a suggestion on how to direct an
output containing only the userid and the time
for each session to a logfile for each user so as
to monitor their online time.

i.e. only these two lines:

Apr 2 08:17:30 localhost pppd[208]: pppd 2.3.7 started by mojo, uid 500
Apr 2 08:33:10 localhost pppd[208]: Connect time 15.3 minutes.

Perhaps the first line containing the userid could
also be omitted as long as the line containing the
connect time was routed to a user specific
logfile.

Then perhaps some shell- or perl script could me
made to calculate the cost afterwards?

Another question: As you can see from the above I
always start pppd as a normal user. I've read that
this is not a good idea - even if I've never seen
an explanation.

Could someone explain why this is ill advised
since being on a standalone system I fail to see
how it might compromise my security?

Regards,

Morten
