Thanks again to everyone who helped with my problem. I upgraded
to ppp-2.3.7, which fixed the main problem (that the downloads
always stopped at the same point in the file). Now the downloads
run to completion, although there are frequent and very long
pauses. I used the new 'record' option in ppp, but I couldn't
spot any problems that were occurring at about the times of the
pauses.
Changing the MRU and MTU sizes doesn't seem to make any
noticeable difference in the pauses.
I'm continuing to try the fixes that everyone sent (hoping to
reduce the stalls), but the main problem is fixed.
