I've been using a cron job to handle this problem, which polls the
connection, but that's only because I was ignorant to the persist option.
I'll try the persist method tonight.

Use the "persist" option in ppp.
I use this, and when I get a SIGHUP,it reconnects.
When using 2.3.6 this option didn't work - but I upgraded to 2.3.7 and it
began working again.
