I thought I would tell you why my ppp connection didn't work. /dev/modem
is indeed irrelivent as several people told me.

I replaced my Hayes Accura 288 modem with another "identical" modem and every
thing worked like a charm with no changes to my config at all. It turns out
that my Accura 288 has version 6.0 firmware and the working Accura 288 has
version 7.0 firmware. Until I receive evidence to the contrary, I am blaming
the firmware since the modem works fine for generic terminal connections
using minicom but it out to lunch as soon as ppp is mentioned.

Meawhile, I am shopping for a new external 56K modem. Thankyou for your
assistance gentlemen.
