Modem troubles

Hi linux gurus.

I have a US Robotics modem and I cannot connect to my ISP using pppd.

When I try to connect to my ISP the modem passes the initialisation
phase, I get the CONNECT message on the screen and then the screen
begins to show garbage.
I do not receive the usual login: password:

Is there anybody who could give me an advice.
