No need for docs specific to version and dist. Unless the dist has
_badly_ mangled the kernel source tree. Which generally doesn't happen.

Take a look at /usr/src/linux/README. With a little luck,
your case should start at the line that reads

CONFIGURING the kernel

All manual operations in configuration and kernel build are
from /usr/src/linux, _not_ from any subdirectory.

Try to follow the instructions in README.

If no luck, post specifics:

-- What command did you give

-- In what directory

-- What were the error messages (if a whole bunch of errors
resulted, what were the first two or three messages)

Follow the README, it'll take you to a configure script which
will prompt you.
