You have to tell your system where to look for DNS info. You do this in
/etc/resolv.conf . Your ISP will have, I trust, supplied you with the IP
addresses of its nameservers.
If you have a small LAN, setting this up is easy. Just put the nameservers
for the PPP connection in resolv.conf and leave them there all the time.
Then use /etc/hosts for your LAN. If you have a big enough LAN that you need
to run DNS locally as well, then it's a bit trickier, and someone else will
have to help with that part.
