Your observation about the cua device is interesting. This is
the only way I can communicate to the modem after running pppd
(outside of running pppd again). This is under kernel 2.2.5.

When I get a chance, I will dive into the code, but that level of
coding is fairly beyond my skill level, but I'll give it a shot.
