The original spec was RFC 1334. Obosleted by RFC 1994 (CHAP), which is in
turn supplemented by RFC 2484 (internationalization). I no longer know the
*best* sources for the RFCs, but one source is ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/ .
