Don't downgrade, the 2.2.x kernels need at least ppp-2.3.5 . The pppd
packages are at the primary site:
cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/
Try ppp-2.3.8 if you really think what's wrong is due to the pppd version.
I've used ppp-2.3.5 and ppp-2.3.8 successful with the 2.2.9 kernel.
