No, with the persist option (which demand implies), pppd does not die
after hanging up the modem and running ip-down.  Instead it tries to
start another connection (after the holdoff period and after waiting
for traffic if the demand option was given).

basie's problem is that something (other than pppd) is sending pppd a
SIGINT signal.
