The current pppd version is 2.3.8 (an RPM is available), and the kernel
code should be at least 2.2.0.

Unless you have a complicated routing situation (ethernet plus ppp, etc.),
you should specify 'defaultroute' in your pppd options. Then PPP will add
and remove the defaultroute for the PPP connection automatically.
