You need to specify at least one argument to ppp-up, "generic" might work.

BTW all this reminded me of why I don't care for configuration scripts -
too much is hidden.  If you reach a point where you'd like to try a couple
of simple scripts that need only minimal changes then let me know and I'll
send them.
