Off Topic: Recording Voice from Modem

I know this is off topic, but here I go anyway.

I want to have my linux box dial a phone number and then record what it hears 
to a file.  Presumably it will hear a recorded message.

I assume I need a modem and sound card and probably a wire connecting the 
two...


Can someone point me in the right direction? Web pages, mailing lists, etc.
