domain/ip converting

Hi everybody,

I am trying to figure out how to get a domain name to ip address and
vice-versa conversion going.

Example:

"telnet a_valid_host_name"
"ping a_valid_host_name"

These 2 lines above do not work!

"telnet ip_address"
"ping ip_address"

These 2 lines above with ip numbers DO work!

How to I fix it so that I can use "a_valid_host_name"
