I read a month or two ago on the WWW that Linux had no support for USB. Maybe
in the future?
As for that HP Pavilion with built-in Losemodem, you ought to be able to get
refund or replacement for a defective product, unless they told you it had
built-in Winmodem. Otherwise, maybe you can buy and install a real modem if
you have an available ISA or PCI slot. There was an article recently on
Warpcast about Actiontec (http://www.actiontec.com/products/modems/cwi/index.html)
about a PCI non-Win modem that works with Windows and non-Windows.
