I have had such a problem and it ended up being an AT
string problem within the modem. I had this problem
when trying to dial into an RS6000 (AIX 4.3.2). I
ended up having to "cu" to the modem and setup the
proper AT string for it. The modem I was using was a
US Robotics Sportster 56K external. I would call US
Robotics support if all else fails to get the proper
string. It could also be the baud rate is off. Good
