I think I may be hitting a bug in ppp, but am not really sure. PPP
works always works fine, except I cannot receive data (at least email
messages and http pages) containing any sequence of characters
repeated many times. This only happens on my laptop when running
redhat 6.0. It doesn't happen when running Windows 98 on the laptop
or on my desktop running redhat 5.2. It happens whether I get data
with netscape or telnet. With telnet, I can see that the
communication between the laptop and pop server, for example, always
locks up after receiving a few hundred repetitions of some character
sequence (usually a single character repeated).

I'm using
RedHat Linux 6.0 Intel pretty much out of the box
   kernel 2.2.5-15
ppp-2.3.7-2.rpm (but dmesg says: "PPP: version 2.3.3", strange)
   Linux NET4.0 for Linux 2.2
 D-Link DMF560TX Ethernet/Modem pcmcia card
 pcmcia-3.0.13 (& earlier) (pcnet_cs, serial_cs)
 TI 1220 PCI-to-CardBus
 TS30I3-14 notebook

The problem might be in the pcmcia driver or the ppp software (or
somewhere else in the net software).

The ppp command I use is:

pppd connect "chat -v -f /home/doug/bin/chat" /dev/modem 115200 -detach
crtscts modem noipdefault defaultroute

I'm using sprynet (pretty much the same as mindspring) with standard
telephone line.

Also, I have conf.modules set so I am loading BSD and Deflate
compression modules and not getting the common error about modprobe
not finding three modules. The problem also occurred before I changed
conf.modules and so was not loading either compression module.
