I use linux-2.2.11 (CONFIG_PNP=y) and ppp-2.3.9.

As long as I used an internal 14.4 BOCA modem as '/dev/ttyS3',
jumpered on IRQ3 and COM4, PPP worked fine.

On Friday the 13th I bought a new internal (jumperless PnP) modem
(and removed the BOCA modem):

        V.90&K56flex Data/Fax 1456VQH PCI modem
(Rockwell HCF 56K DataFax RTAD PCI modem rev. 1.0)

Under WDOS (COM3, IRQ 9) it runs fine.

The rest of your message (not quoted here) shows symptoms of Winmodem, an
epidemic disease today: not recognized as serial port, no hardware controller.
There are a very few PCI honest modems, one brand being Actiontec:
http://www.actiontec.com/products/modems/cwi/index.html

I got this information from a Warpcast message (http://www.warpcast.com).

Friday the 13th proved to be a bad day for buying that modem, but it wouldn't
have done better on any other day.

Only thing to do is to return that Winmodem for refund or replacement: it is
defective, even if it works as manufactured! If you thought you were buying
beef but got textured vegetable protein instead, you would certainly be entitled
to refund. Same with that Winmodem!
