Hi, You may be true beause i had to fight out for a month to get my PPPD
functional in a RDHat 6.0 Linux with precompiled pppd 2.3.7. I did not
expect any bug in PPPD. My settings were also correct and I had to disturb
gurus to get PPPD functional. But what is amazing is that when I did
following my box started working.
changed the mode of pppd to 'u+x'

with AutoPPP enabled i logged in from Win95 machine in terminal mode and
then issued /usr/sbin/pppd. It worked fine and incidently when i tested
for autologin it started functioning. It strange beacuse i did not change
any setup other that the mode of pppd.
