I have set up Mgetty (1.1.21) and pppd 2.3.10 on a Linux-Mandrake box (6.0)
for use as a dial in server.
When trying to connect from a Win98 machine via dial-in, I get the
following:

Linux webserver 2.2.9-19mdk #7 SMP Thu Oct 28 09:23:35 MDT 1999 i686 unknown

Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver kernel: PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling)
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver pppd[1669]: pppd 2.3.10 started by LOGIN, uid 0
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver pppd[1669]: ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT): Operation not
permitted(1)
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver pppd[1669]: tcsetattr: Operation not permitted
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver pppd[1669]: Exit.
Oct 28 12:31:57 webserver kernel: registered device ppp0

and then the line disconnects.
in the mgetty.log.ttyD0 (I am using a digiboard 8 port PCI board) I get
this:

10/28 12:31:57 ##### data dev=ttyD0, pid=1669, caller='none',
conn='26400/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS', name='', cmd='/usr/sbin/pppd',
user='/AutoPPP/'

I have recompiled and reinstalled mgetty and pppd several times, chmod u+s
/usr/sbin/pppd and hacked my mgetty files to no end. the digiboard ports
(ttyD0-D7) are all owned and grouped by 'uucp' which is what I specified in
the policy.h file of mgetty before compiling.

this is the line from mgetty.login I am using:
/AutoPPP/ -    - /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login kdebug 7 debug -detach

I also have an options file for each ttyD# device in /etc/ppp/ directory. I
have tried removing pap-secrets and chap-secrets with no change, both
scripts in that dir (ip-up and ip-down) are executable and owned by root....
I have been all over today trying to solve this.... Any ideas would be
appreciated :)
