Thanks, I'll file that away for future reference.  I'm just not use
to seeing the dial time exceed the PPP link negotiation time.

|Sounds likely.

The 600 second chat timeout and the "very very slow" connection suggested
that but now I'm not at all sure.  It still should be checked though, and I
have nothing else to suggest unless it's to use the option "asyncmap 0". 

It *might* be useful to add the option "debug" and examine the PPP link
negotiation messages for anything unusual.
