for redhat boxes (I am not sure for 6.x releases), to enable ip forwarding
by default, edit the file

/etc/sysconfig/network

look for the line

FORWARD_IPV4

and set it to "yes" or "true" if it is not there, just add
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
