if you have a PC and an internal modem you can tell if it's a "winmodem"
by seeing if the PC's BIOS detects it. look for a message stating how
many serial ports your PC has -- if it's one more than you know your
motherboard or i/o card has, then it is the modem, which is probably a
proper modem.
