They don't help much except in special situations where the particular CCP
algorithm happens to compress something better than the modem does.
Not many ISP implement the free CCP algorithms that are available to pppd
anyway, and some ISPs don't do CCP at all since, with many connections, it
can place a significant load on the ISP host.
