I've got more confusion now than before, but less urge to continue
working on this problem. I recompiled my kernel, in preparation for
throwing in a few more printk() statements, and the problem appears to
have gone away. At least, the same file no longer creates any
problems, and I have not yet found another file that fails.
Interestingly, I had not yet recompiled the modules when the problem
disappeared. To me, this says that the problem is probably bug with
the 2.2.13 kernel instead of a misconfiguration. But it seems like it
would be pretty difficult to track it down without resorting to silly
tricks (a la remote kernel debugging).
So since I no longer have overt symptoms, I'm going to forget about it
for now. I still can't connect to one of my two ISP's, but I'll
upgrade my kernel at some point to whatever is the latest out there
and see if that helps. But if I can find a reproducible failure
again, I'll keep searching for a solution.
Thanks for your help!
