I really don't know what's happened here, but often using the pppd option
"asyncmap a0000" will cure a wierd problem that begins with authentication
or IPCP negotiation.  Note that the peer asks for a0000 which is often is
a clue for such a problem.

If that doesn't bring joy then post the pppd script and options and the
mgetty inittab line and options as well as a PPP negotiation log with the
option "kdebug 7" added.
