Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but doesn't this mean the array(s) was
made without the persistant superblock on it?  You would still be able
to start and stop the array using raid[stop|start] without persistant
superblocks, right?

Or were they created with the superblock, and the new kernel you're
using just isn't seeing it?
