With -a (which is really -p), it picks the "correct" response to all of
the fsck questions, to maximize the amount of files saved. In most
cases, the correct answer to e2fsck is "y", but in some rare cases it is
"n", so the -p option picks the right one.
If you use -y, it will also clean the filesystem by answering "y" to
all questions, but this may result in more inodes being put to lost+found
or other actions you don't expect. The -n option is guaranteed not to
do any changes to the filesystem by answering "n" to all questions.
Also, how are you doing your test? Are you sure you have the same
errors on disk between the two tests? This can make a big difference.
